Passing Through

Created for the Biennale Internationale du Lin de Port Neuf 2023, this work responds to the theme Sans domicile fixe—homelessness. My interpretation of “home” is not grounded in a physical location, but in a state of mind or the condition of the soul.

Passing Through was remounted at Galerie Montcalm, 2024.

I was inspired by refugees and prisoners of conscience. The strength of our inner being is key to how we navigate the changes and chances that life brings. To represent individual souls, I arrived at a form open to both receiving and letting go. The diversity of these cone-like shapes—emerging from the tension released through my process—reflects the wide spectrum of lived experience within the human family.

These forms are suspended within an energy field, a chaotic web rising toward the heavens. This network evokes systems of connection—neural pathways, the cardiovascular system, social bonds. It may suggest a ladder, a safety net, or a maze. Their precarious arrangement draws attention to the fragility and impermanence of life.

Through the lens of social justice, I reflect on the impoverishment of our collective soul. Why is it that we are unable to offer shelter to the most vulnerable among us? And what does it reveal about our own spiritual condition when we choose to live without roots or deep connection to others?
This work is offered as a meditation—on home, on belonging, and on how we choose to spend our time as we are simply passing through.
